It’s never too early to plan your next trip to this popular national wilderness area. Entry permits are required May 1 to September 30. Before and after require self-permitting, done right at the landing or entry point.
Entry permits may be applied for by lottery online on and after December 1 for the following year. The lottery drawing is held on January 15 for permits for that year. Remaining permits are available first come, first served online on or after January 20, and also by phone (877-444-6777) on or after February 1.
If you wish to visit a particular area you must act early. Reservation and user fees, as well as permit rules, may change year to year, so call for information. Have a valid Visa or Mastercard ready when making your reservation.
Reservation number is 877-444-6777. Superior National Forest number in Duluth is 218-626-4300. Online reservations are made at recreation.gov. Visit www.recreationj.gov for other information, including permit availability.
By the way, if you are new to the BWCAW, contact those of us who are familiar to help plan your trip. I’ve never met an experienced paddler who wasn’t more than happy to offer tips and advice. There are probably folks in your area who can help, and it can make your trip much more enjoyable.
